Official Dream Riders Expedition Protocol

Introduction

Zanskar is one of the most remote and challenging motorcycle destinations in the Himalayas, known for rugged mountain roads, high passes, deep valleys, ancient monasteries and isolated villages. Riding through Zanskar can involve narrow rocky roads, loose gravel, steep climbs, water crossings and long stretches with limited facilities. Riders need good preparation, advanced riding skills and the ability to adapt to changing mountain conditions.

Before starting your Zanskar Motorcycle Tour, make sure you have the required travel and riding documents, suitable protective gear and appropriate travel insurance. Check the latest weather and road conditions before entering remote sections, as snowfall, rainfall, landslides and road damage can affect mountain routes.

Zanskar is also home to unique Buddhist traditions, local communities and fragile high-altitude landscapes. Respecting monasteries, villages, wildlife and the natural environment is an important part of responsible travel. Following your Tour Guide, Tour Manager and support team's instructions will help you handle Zanskar's demanding terrain safely and responsibly.

Zanskar Travel Do’s

CRUCIAL DO'S
Check the latest weather and road conditions before crossing high passes and travelling through remote areas. Conditions can change quickly, and rain, snowfall, landslides or damaged roads may affect the route.
Carry your valid driving licence, required travel documents and applicable permits throughout the journey. Check the latest requirements before travelling through restricted or protected areas.
Carry sufficient drinking water and stay properly hydrated throughout the journey. High-altitude riding and long riding days can increase the need for regular hydration.
Make sure your motorcycle is properly serviced before the ride. Check the tyres, brakes, chain, lights, fluids and other essential components before entering Zanskar's remote mountain sections.
Follow the Tour Guide, Tour Manager and support team's instructions during difficult road sections, water crossings, changing weather and other situations where local route knowledge is important.
Be prepared for rocky roads, loose gravel, steep climbs, sharp bends and water crossings. Maintain a controlled speed and use appropriate off-road riding techniques on difficult sections.
Respect monasteries, temples, villages and local traditions. Dress appropriately at religious places, follow site-specific instructions and ask permission before photographing people or culturally sensitive activities.
Stay on designated roads and tracks and protect Zanskar's fragile environment. Maintain a safe distance from wildlife, avoid disturbing animals and take all waste back with you.

Travel Don’ts

STRICT DON'TS
Do not ride aggressively on narrow rocky roads, blind bends, steep descents or loose surfaces. Avoid risky overtaking and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and riders.
Do not underestimate Zanskar's altitude, remoteness and challenging terrain. Avoid pushing yourself if you experience unusual breathlessness, dizziness, severe headache or other concerning symptoms, and seek appropriate medical assistance when required.
Do not attempt to cross swollen streams, unstable bridges or severely damaged road sections when conditions are unsafe. Wait for guidance from the tour team or local authorities.
Do not enter restricted or protected areas without the required permits or authorisation. Always follow checkpoint requirements and instructions from local authorities.
Do not litter, damage rocks or vegetation, disturb wildlife or behave disrespectfully at monasteries, villages, lakes and other natural or cultural sites. Respect Zanskar's fragile environment and local communities.
