Official Dream Riders Expedition Protocol

Introduction

Ladakh is one of India’s most challenging motorcycle destinations, known for high mountain passes, remote valleys, dramatic landscapes, monasteries and long stretches of rugged Himalayan roads. Riding here means dealing with high altitude, low oxygen levels, changing weather, rough surfaces, water crossings and limited facilities in remote areas. Proper preparation and responsible riding are essential for a safe and enjoyable journey.

Before starting your Ladakh Motorcycle Tour, make sure you have the required travel and riding documents, suitable protective gear and appropriate travel insurance. Riders arriving in Leh should allow the required acclimatization period before travelling to higher-altitude areas. Staying hydrated, avoiding overexertion and paying attention to altitude-related symptoms are particularly important.

Ladakh is also an ecologically fragile and culturally sensitive region. Respecting monasteries, local communities, wildlife and protected areas is an important part of responsible travel. Following your tour team's instructions and local authorities’ advisories will help you handle the demanding conditions of Ladakh responsibly.

Ladakh Travel Do’s

CRUCIAL DO'S
Allow at least 24 hours for acclimatization in Leh before travelling to higher-altitude areas. Keep the first two days easy, stay hydrated and allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.
Drink sufficient water throughout the journey and carry enough drinking water when riding through remote areas. Ladakh Tourism advises around 3–4 litres of water daily at altitude.
Carry your valid passport, driving licence, required travel documents and any applicable permits throughout the journey. Follow all checkpoint and permit requirements for restricted or protected areas.
Make sure your motorcycle is properly serviced and suitable for Ladakh’s mountain terrain. Check tyres, brakes, chain, lights, fluids and fuel before starting long or remote riding sections.
Check weather and road conditions before crossing high passes and remote routes. Be prepared for sudden rain, snow, strong winds, landslides, water crossings and temporary road disruptions.
Follow the Tour Manager and support team's instructions during riding days, particularly on high passes, difficult road sections, water crossings and remote routes.
Carry sufficient cash and keep your phone charged before leaving Leh or other major towns. ATM access and mobile connectivity can be limited in remote areas of Ladakh.
Respect monasteries, villages, wildlife and the fragile environment. Stay on designated roads and tracks, maintain a safe distance from animals and avoid disturbing local communities or protected habitats.

Travel Don’ts

STRICT DON'TS
Do not rush to high-altitude destinations immediately after arriving in Leh. Do not ignore symptoms such as persistent headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness; stop ascending and seek appropriate medical assistance if symptoms worsen.
Do not consume alcohol or smoke during the initial acclimatization period, and avoid alcohol when riding or when altitude symptoms are present.
Do not ride aggressively on narrow mountain roads, blind bends, steep descents or difficult passes. Maintain a controlled speed and avoid risky overtaking, particularly where visibility is limited.
Do not photograph military installations, army convoys, or sensitive border checkposts.
Do not cross swollen streams, unstable bridges, flooded sections or damaged roads when conditions are unsafe. Follow the instructions of the tour team and local authorities during adverse weather.
